SUMMARY

This workshop is the sixth in a successful series of YEP meetings at EURANDOM in the years 2004-2008. This year, the main focus of the workshop will be on "Fragmentation, coalescence and probabilistic genetics".

Fragmentation processes model situations in which an object falls apart with time (e.g. through splitting, erosion or break-ups) while coalescence processes describe systems where clusters aggregate to form larger structures (e.g. through coagulation, gelation or aggregation). These processes have been the focus of a lot of attention in recent years, partly because of the wide variety of contexts in which they appear (for example in population genetics and evolutionary biology, physical chemistry or astrophysics) and partly because of the rich relations to other important areas of probability research, such as branching processes, random trees or random self-similar structures. In the workshop we will focus on new mathematical developments and applications to populations genetics.

The workshop will be organised around two mini courses presented by top experts in the field of fragmentation and coalescent processes. Nathanaël Berestycki (Cambridge) and Bénédicte Haas (Paris), who will each present a course of three sessions of two hours each, with the titles “Coalescent processes and population genetics" (Berestycki) “Fragmentation processes and real trees" (Haas)

Additionally, Sasha Gnedin (Utrecht) and Matthias Birkner (Berlin) will each give an extended lecture of two hours covering important new developments in discrete probability and probabilistic genetics.

Beyond these more experienced speakers, we are planning to invite up to sixteen researchers at an early stage of their career, typically in the final phase of their PhDs or postdocs. They will be encouraged to give 45 minutes talks on their own research topics. Experience from previous workshops shows that the meeting take place in an atmosphere of intense scientific curiosity and many participants use the opportunity to develop collaborative bonds with each other.
