Volume II, Issue 2 -- August 2000

NEWS

The Board of EURANDOM is very pleased to announce the appointment of Frank den Hollander (now professor at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands and  coordinator of the group Interacting Stochastic Systems) as scientific director of EURANDOM for 5 years. He will have a permanent appointment as a professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) in the department of Mathematics and Computing Science 

Furthermore the Board decided to appoint Henry Wynn (professor at the University of Warwick, UK) for 2 years as part-time co-director. He will especially give attention to managing the area of Applications of Statistics and he will assist the scientific director.

Starting date for both appointments: October 1, 2000.

On that same date Willem van Zwet will step down as scientific director; he will continue his work for EURANDOM until September 1, 2001.

Professor Mike Keane was nominated as a foreign member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences (end of July). 
On April 17, 2000 professor Aad van der Vaart received the Van Dantzig Award 2000; professor Willem van Zwet  was nominated as member of honour of the VVS, the Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research.

With the appointment of  three postdocs, the group Computational Molecular Biology will start in September 2000. Furthermore a workshop in this area is planned in January 2001.

The first  EURANDOM postdocs (who started in September, October, November 1998) with  2-year-contracts, are beginning to leave EURANDOM. They all found new jobs at prestigious other universities or research centers.
*Brandon Whitcher obtained a research position at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Geophysical Statistics Project, CGD.
*Matthias Löwe accepted an appointment as assistant professor at the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands (permanent position).
*Irina Kurkova got a permanent position as assistant professor at the university Paris VI, France.
*Jeffrey Collamore moves to Zürich for a postdoc position at the ETH.
*Franz Merkl goes to Bielefeld, were he will start the so-called 'Habilitation'; during this period  he will be back for several months at EURANDOM.
*Cheikh Diack has an appointment as lecturer at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dahran.
Also Wim Schoutens, who was one year at EURANDOM on a FWO-grant, will leave to return to the Catholic University of Leuven.

ACTIVITIES

The following a workshops will take place in (near) future: 

* Frontier Research In Theoretical Statistics 2000  (August 17-19)  
International conference (in the fields of statistics and probability and their ramifications) on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Prof. Frits Ruymgaart.

* Course and Workshop of the Financial Stochastics programme (August 23-26)
- Concentrated course on Extremes and Financial Risks
- Workshop on Risk, Insurance and Extremes

* Workshop on Fluid Queues (September 25-29, 2000)

* European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics -ENBIS meeting and course (December 2000)

Furthermore in 2001:

Workshop on Stochastic Analysis : Geometric aspects and applications organized together with DFG-Schwerpunkt (January 8 - 11)
* Workshop on Computational Molecular Biology
* Workshop on Inverse Problems in Statistics (January 25 - 27)
